ESPN- LSU has suspended men's basketball coach Will Wade indefinitely, the school announced Friday. The decision comes a day after reports that FBI wiretaps intercepted telephone calls between Wade and aspiring business manager Christian Dawkins, in which Wade expressed frustration about his inability to close what he described as a "strong-ass offer" for a recruit.
Wiretaps in college basketball? That's wild. LSU is having their best season of the last decade and now that seems to be in jeporady. Sitting as the 10th ranked team in the country with a 24-5 record, the Tigers have a chance to at least share the SEC regular season championship with a win against Vanderbilt Saturday. So as you could imagine, a newly hired coach, having success in his second year at the program, has to be cheating somehow. The NCAA lives for this shit. Whenever parody occurs in college sports, the NCAA sends the dogs after you. But if you read the quote closely, you'll see they aren't the ones who suspended him. LSU did... Interesting. What does that mean?
Perhaps LSU has more information than originally reported. It would make sense that once all the rumors began, they sat down with their coach to see what they were really facing. I'd imagine given the success of the team this year, LSU would not have suspended him unless they absolutely had too. However, this is very similar to what happened last year with Arizona basketball coach Sean Miller. Arizona suspended Miller when the program was being looked into for bribery allegations. He returned after just one game (Eventually leading to an upset loss to Buffalo in the NCAA tournament which crippled the wallet... some things you never forget).
In the coming days, more and more information will undoubtedly leak. Unfortunately for Wade and the LSU Tigers, I don't think it'll be positive information. But you just have to love the griminess of college sports. Year after year some program goes through it. If you're an LSU fan, I feel for ya.
