If you’ve been following our content from the beginning stages, you know this article is going to be quite biased. I can’t help myself, I have some sort of weird fetish for the small mid-major schools. I think it’s the underdog complex that I’m so drawn too. However, if you’ve been watching the Bulldogs since the beginning of the NCAAB tournament, you know they’re the team to beat.
From the start of the season, my champion has been the Gonzaga Bulldogs. The Duke hype train wasn’t for me even after watching them dismantle Kentucky by 1,000. I’ve been so invested in this team that I bought apparel to represent them during our Vegas trip last week. I have no connection to this team. My parents didn’t go there and neither did any siblings or relatives. Just a lost sports fan trying to find a home I guess. And boy did I find a good one. The Gonzaga Bulldogs avenged last year’s sweet 16 loss to Florida State by beating them last night 72-58. If was an off night offensively for the number one ranked offense in the country, but that’s what made the win most impressive.
The question with Gonzaga all year has been their defense. At times they’ve looked really good defensively, but then, they’ve had some really bad showings. And then last night happened. Holding a top 30 offense to under 60 points in the Sweet 16 I’d say is a good indicator about their defensive ability. In their three tournament games, the Bulldogs average margin of victory is 21.3 points per game. They’re averaging over 80 points offensively while holding opponents to just 59 points per game. Bops is the self-proclaimed “stats” guy, but I’m not too dumb to realize how impressive that is. Those are three very dominant stats and I think that shows you this Gonzaga team is primed for a breakthrough. Gonzaga will face Texas Tech Saturday in what features the countries best offense against the best defense. Defense wins championships no? Not this year!
So basically I’m saying fuck the blue bloods. Most of the people are probably muttering to themselves, “but what about Zion?” Ya he’s must watch television every time he’s on but I don’t need to see another Duke national championship. Also, a lot of people forget Gonzaga is the only team to beat Duke at full strength. Interesting. So while the masses cheer on the 5-star recruits and legendary coaches, I’ll gladly sit on my ass and pull in the overlooked transfers. Plus, I bet Coach K and Roy Williams can’t do this…
