Welcome to the second installment of Press Box Sport's MLB Power Rankings. There have been a few changes since last week. The biggest surprise from this weekend had to be the Cubs getting swept by the Cardinals.
Below are our power rankings for all 30 teams with a little bit of info on some of the top 10 or so teams as well as my thoughts on one other team - you'll see below. These rankings will be done each week and are based on standings, win/loss record, star power, how they played that week, and just a little bit of bias...
1. Dodgers (2) - Three people on this team have at least as many walks as they do strikeouts per game and they lead the National League in walks and fewest strikeouts. They are a very tough team to beat.
2. Astros (1) - Even though I had these guys number 1 last week, I forgot how good they were until I saw them play the Cubs and realized how many of their stars didn't even play that series and still took two out of three.
3. Twins (3)- The twins just keep running away with the division. Part of that reason is the White Sox taking three out of four from the Indians (more on them in a little bit), but these guys are for real.
4. Yankees (6)- I really want to have them higher, but regardless of records, they are still in a really tough division. Gary Sanchez had a week however that showed us how deep this team is.
5. Brewers (5)- I would have loved to move the Crew up a few spots this week, but I had to give the edge to the Yankees. However, taking three out of four in Pittsburgh is no small task and should not be over-looked. Now that Jimmy Nelson is finally coming back, things could be looking up even higher.
6. Rays (7) - This is one of the teams I have lower than some other publications. I will admit they're hanging around, I'm just not a huge believer yet. I do love what they're doing with openers though, I'm all for that.
7. Cubs (4)- Rough week for these guys. Losing two out of three to the Reds and the Astros and then getting swept in St Louis. Things might get a little easier going out to LA, but who knows. Last time I checked Mike Trout is still out there and is one of the best baseball players to have ever played the game.
8. Red Sox (8) - I know, I know, they just beat the Yankees yesterday, but that doesn't change the fact that they're still 8.5 games back out of first place.
9. Phillies (9) - Bryce Harper has been starting to play up to his contract in terms of both offense and defense. I just don't think this team has enough weapons to go far, but that could all change with the trade market starting to heat up (thanks to the new deadline rule) and with free agent signings about to pop once the MLB draft is over this week.
10. Braves (10) - Not a great week for these guys, not a terrible week. However, they do have some games coming up which should certainly help they're record between the Pirates (twice), Marlins, and Mets.
11. Cardinals (11)
12. Athletics (12)
13. Padres (14)
14. Diamondbacks (15)
15. Reds (16)
16. Pirates (17)
17. White Sox (20)- What a week for these guys! I was sorry to see their streak come to an end but still, winning 6 out of your last 7 is awesome. It only gets better due to the fact they swept the Royals who are somehow still upset they can't get Tim Anderson out so they have to hit him (until he hit the walk-of haha!). I even bumped them down a spot from last week for good measure. And I could write all day about what Giolito is doing. Another 7+ innings of shutout baseball. It kills me that people still have the Indians higher than them.
18. Rangers (18)
19. Indians (13)
20. Angles (19)
21. Mets (21)
22. Rockies (22)
23. Nationals (23)
24. Blue Jays (24)
25. Mariners (25)
26. Giants (26)
27. Tigers (27)
28. Marlins (29)
29. Royals (28)
30. Orioles (30)
See you next week! D. Heath
