Machado Deal Winners & Losers

Writer's picture: BenBen

Winners: Chicago White Sox.

I don't actually believe this but I just want to try and make my White Sox friends feel better. The Sox avoid paying $300 million dollars to a player that has:

-One .300 season

-One 100+ RBI season

-One top-10 Wins Above Replacement season

-Never Hit 40 homers

-Never stole 20 bases.

Obviously Macahdo is about as good as it gets in the game. So not signing him isn't a win for any franchise but I do think the Sox are still at a point in their rebuild that nothing is ruined. They still have the cap space. So once Moncada, Eloy, Michael Kopech, and a few of the other prospects come up and start to show they can do it at the big league level the White Sox instantly become a very intriguing destination for the next few years. You are down but not out.

Ok not taking objectiveness out of it, HAHA GO CUBS GO.

Losers:

I think what makes the Sox losers here is how they have handled it since the news broke. Jerry Reinsdorf once again proves that he is not willing to spend money to get the big free agent. As much as I would like to laugh at him, I can't because he is also in the midst of ruining my favorite NBA team the Bulls. But it has also been reported that the White Sox final offer to Machado was an 8 year/$250 Million guarantee with the potential for the deal to reach $320-$350 million if all options years were vested and certain incentives were met.

It sounds like Machado wanted the $300 million guarantee which he got in San Diego, and didn't want to have to work for that money. Falls right in line with what we have come to know about Manny.

'“Obviously I’m not going to change, I’m not the type of player that’s going to be ‘Johnny Hustle,’ and run down the line and slide to first base and … you know, whatever can happen. That’s just not my personality, that’s not my cup of tea, that’s not who I am."-Manny Machado via The Athletic. Yes this was a real quote during Machado's playoff run last year.

But I think what really makes this sting for the Sox is that they seemed to have so much momentum. The rebuild was looking up and up, they had meetings with both Bryce Harper and Machado and seemingly were amongst finalist for both. Went out and signed a few of Machado's closest friends to their lineup. It seemed inevitable for the Sox to land him. This one will sting for a little if you're a Sox fan but again I truly believe this could be good. You have to hope that Reinsdorf and Rick Hahn take this one on the chin and use it to learn how to handle this situations moving forward. And Hahn is vowing to the right things already, time to take action.

Winners: Padres

Obvious winners here signing a player of Machado's magnitude. They add a top 10 player in the league to a lineup that already features Eric Hosmer and the Padres have 10 of the top 100 prospects in the MLB. Plus Machado has a opt out after year 5 of the deal so he can finesse all this money for 5 years and if the Padres rebuild fails he can enter free agency at the age of 31 and still get a boatload of money. Real tough life.

Nice ballpark and beautiful Southern Cal. I can think of worse places to spend $300 million dollars over the next 10 years.
