Over the weekend, Antonio Brown and the Pittsburgh Steelers finally parted ways. Brown was traded to the Oakland Raiders for a 3rd and 5rd round draft pick. A day later, Brown finds himself in the same position most of us are in after beginning a new relationship. The honeymoon stage.

What a start to the relationship. Clearly Antonio Brown’s excited to be in a new city while Derek Carr is just happy to have somebody to throw to besides Jared Cook. There’s nothing like the first month or two of a relationship. Blinded by the talent, the Raiders will completely ignore the fact that Brown had been a major distraction all season and seems very high maintenance. But that’s what we all do. Ignore red flags because the prize is too good to pass up on.
So who’s in for the bigger rude awakening… Antonio Brown or the Oakland Raiders? Derek Carr regardless is a winner in this situation. He out kicked his coverage and just has to not blow it. The Raiders have been to the playoffs just once in the last 17 seasons. So adding a piece like Brown is worth the headache because he brings your team plenty of opportunity. However, for a player that loves to compete and is used to winning 9 or more games a year, Brown may find it difficult to be part of a losing culture. And what a downgrade at the quarterback position. Brown goes from a Hall of Fame type QB to Derek Carr. Carr’s first three seasons in the NFL were promising. He threw for 81 touchdowns and only 31 interceptions during that span. That means his touchdown to interception ratio was 2.6. In the last two seasons though, that ratio is 1.8.
I’m not saying I expect this relationship to fail, but it has disaster written all over it. It’s kinda like when your younger sister brings home the bad boy. You don’t think it’ll work, but you’re hoping for the best. Brown very easily could be a reliable weapon that Carr targets 15 times or more a game. Or Brown could just throw in the towel when he’s see these two are in charge of him. I look forward to see how this all plays out.
